DESIGN
Designing a capable, fast and above all exhilarating E-Mountain Bike (E-MTB) comes with many challenges.
- Weight of the system – this can impact the performance of the bike, especially when climbing uphill
- Maintaining a "snappy" riding quality (responds easily to pedaling and manoeuvring) whilst accommodating longer wheelbase given down tube battery integration.
- Ensuring component choice matches power of the drivetrain system
Both the McLaren E-MTB offerings strike that balance between snappy handling and stability on the downhill, whilst also ensuring maximum comfort for climbing hills.
Mountain bikes have continued to get longer, lower, and slacker (reducing the center of gravity making it easier to handle). Reach continues to be reduced (meaning you can be more agile on your ride), whilst effective top tube has been maintained through seat tube angles becoming steeper. To provide the rider with a better position when putting the power down on steep gradients, our Extreme features a 75º seat tube angle and 65º headtube angle. In addition, a steeper seat tube angle also compliments bike handling with longer reach.
SPORT
The Sport E-MTB has been designed by the McLaren Automotive design team as an everyday all-rounder, striking the perfect balance between weight and power, whilst maximising rider comfort through wheelbase length, slack head tube angle and steep seat tube angle.
The bike features the ever-dependable and sleek SRAM GX 12s groupset (38t front chainring / 10-50t cassette) and also features G2 RE 4-piston as the perfect braking solution for trail ready E-MTBs, capable of handling the higher average speeds and increased mass. 200mm front rotor and 180mm rear deliver brilliant stopping power.

Featuring Rockshox Pike (140mm travel) up front, this hardtail E-MTB is fast, smooth and exciting. Rolling on a 27.5” carbon wheelset shod with Pirelli E-MTB Scorpion M 2.6” tires, traction and stability are prioritised.

McLaren automotive design Class A Surface (CAS) work
Class-A (or 'Strak') is a term used specifically in automotive design. It describes the final production surface data for the aesthetic parts of the car and in this case, for the E-MTB frames.
The term 'Class A' is often misunderstood, but it's generally seen as the 'Holy Grail' of surface modeling. This is because it achieves the highest surface quality levels, important for when you move to the stage of frame production, and demands a high level of design knowledge as well as surface modeling skills.
McLaren CAS designers committed 650 hours of engineering and CAS design work to both Sport and Extreme models.
Class A represents the 'craftwork' end of the design process. Creating the main surface shapes to describe the product is the primary design activity, but the painstaking, detailed craftsmanship of perfecting those surfaces is what guarantees that a beautiful design turns into a beautiful manufactured product.
INTEGRATED HANDLEBARS
The bike industry is shifting towards integration of all cables, accessories and componentry on e-bikes. Whilst the e-bike market is pushing for integration of displays and batteries, there is little consideration towards integration of a full package for the front end. Many products currently at market deliver a screen integrated in the top tube or tacked onto the handlebars.
We went the next step, providing one of the first E-MTB integrated handlebar stem system, complete with 3.3” by 2.8” integrated color display, internal cabling and also a trail (and road) ready front light. The front light provides low, high beam and day-running light options. The light is fully integrated with the display, making the system seamless and user friendly, whilst maintaining a "clean" looking cockpit design.
Ventilation of the system is provided through external fairings, all the while maintaining a durable and element-resistant design to stand up to the challenges of off-road and trail riding.
